From PLC to software: secure data collection with OPC UA
A practical checklist for connecting PLC data to MES and business software: device access, certificates, data quality and recovery.

Connectivity is not the same as reliable integration
Reading a PLC tag does not make it ready for business decisions. Its meaning, unit, update rate and quality need to be understood. OPC UA provides a framework for communication and information modelling between systems. Suitability still depends on the device model, firmware, licence and existing network design.
Separate observation from control permissions
Production reporting often needs read access only. Avoid granting unnecessary write permissions to reporting software. Define which client can read which tags, who approves access and how certificates are renewed. OPC Foundation describes encryption, authentication and auditing among its security capabilities; the deployment must configure them appropriately.
Four discovery tasks
Start with a device and protocol inventory. Identify network boundaries and permitted connection directions. Map timestamps, quality codes and data types. Finally, specify where events are buffered during an outage and how duplicate delivery is handled. Do not assume a single ready-made connector works across every machine. An explicit mapping is easier to maintain than an undocumented tag list.
Acceptance scenarios for the pilot
Prepare controlled tests for certificate expiry, server restarts, invalid types and intermittent connectivity. When a source disconnects, its last value must not appear to be current. Operators should recognise stale data immediately. Coordinate tests with production owners and avoid changing live control logic merely to test reporting.
How PLC, SCADA and MES meet
The PLC may own machine control, SCADA the operator monitoring interface, and MES the production context. Responsibilities vary between plants. Nexus Core Studio scopes automation and software together after reviewing the existing system. A tag dictionary, access matrix and documented recovery behaviour are useful first deliverables.

Frequently asked questions
Is OPC UA available on every PLC?
No. Device model, firmware, licence and network architecture need verification. A suitable gateway or another protocol may be required.
Must the PLC program change for data collection?
Not always. An existing interface may be sufficient. Any required change should be planned separately with its operational risk and production impact.
